Historic City of Galle – Be transported back to the glorious days of colonial eras
Located in the southern tip of Sri Lanka, Galle is a living time capsule. Often referred to as ‘the walled city’, it is the capital of the nation’s southern province. The charming city is home to the majestic Dutch fort which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, transporting you back to the Dutch colonial era. Making Galle the perfect example of a fortified city, the fort built by Europeans in southeast and south Asia, showcases the interaction between south Asian traditions and European architectural styles.

The panoramic views of the ocean and town from the fort’s encircling walls never seize to amaze visitors. However, a significant part of the Fort’s allure, is the fact that it still houses courts, export companies, administrative offices and many residences. Asia’s largest remaining fortress built by European occupiers, the Fort is a must visit for any traveller to Sri Lanka.
Another major attraction in the city is the Unawatuna bay providing safe snorkelling and swimming owing to the reef that protects it. A large mound-like hill named Rumassala, located in Unawatuna, is recognized for having a connection with certain events of the Ramayana.
Having stood since the early sixteenth century, throughout the Colonial eras of the Portuguese, Dutch and British, Galle has come a long way to becoming a proclaimed Archaeological Reserve. Among other salient landmarks in the walled city are the National Maritime Museum, the natural harbour and a special Shiva temple.
